How to Repair Pool Deck Cracks: Types, Causes, and Solutions

Featured Image Coming Soon

Pool deck cracks are one of the most common issues Tucson homeowners face. Arizona's extreme temperature swings (sometimes 50+ degrees in a single day), expansive soil, and UV degradation create conditions where even well-built concrete cracks over time. Understanding the type and cause of your cracks is the first step to fixing them correctly.

Types of Pool Deck Cracks

Hairline Cracks

Thin surface cracks less than 1/8 inch wide. Usually caused by shrinkage during curing or minor thermal movement. These are cosmetic and typically do not indicate structural problems. A sealer or crack filler addresses them.

Expansion Cracks

Cracks that follow the line of expansion joints or radiate from corners and edges. In Tucson, concrete expands and contracts significantly with temperature changes. When expansion joints fail, the concrete cracks along lines of stress. These need joint repair followed by crack filling.

Structural Cracks

Wide cracks (1/4 inch or more) that extend through the full depth of the concrete. One side may be higher than the other. These indicate soil movement, settling, or inadequate sub-base. Structural cracks require professional repair that addresses the underlying cause.

Spalling

Flaking, chipping, or crumbling of the concrete surface. Often caused by freeze-thaw cycles (rare in Tucson) or salt/chemical damage. More commonly in Tucson, spalling results from improper curing during installation or exposure to aggressive pool chemicals.

DIY Crack Repair

For hairline and minor surface cracks, DIY repair is feasible:

  1. Clean the crack thoroughly with a wire brush and compressed air
  2. Apply a concrete crack filler (polyurethane or epoxy-based)
  3. Smooth the filler level with the surrounding surface
  4. Allow full cure time before traffic
  5. Apply a concrete sealer over the repair

DIY products work well for individual hairline cracks but struggle with larger or structural cracks. Color matching is also difficult.

When to Call a Professional

Professional repair is recommended when:

  • Cracks are wider than 1/4 inch
  • The concrete is uneven on either side of the crack
  • Multiple cracks are spreading across the deck
  • Cracks reappear after previous repair
  • You want the repair to be invisible (color-matched)
  • There are trip hazard concerns
